My Last, at Last!

This will be my last post. Exactly 6 years, 2 months, and 1 day ago I posted near the start of my final deployment, living on Bagram Air Base (BAF). Since then, my wife and I have moved four times, witnessed three of our children get married, and welcomed two beautiful granddaughters into our lives. We've graduated from the US Army War College, fought the DOD to the Supreme Court in defense of religious liberty in the military, and despite the threats of senior officers both within and without the chaplaincy reached this moment: retirement.

The decision to retire was made about 18 months ago. And now, here we are after 32 years, 9 months, and 9 days of Active Federal Service.

Today is my last day in uniform. Tomorrow marks my first day as a civilian since well before 9/11. It's a bittersweet transition.

Though I'm struggling to identify my exact emotions, I can say with absolute sincerity that I spent those years dong what God called me to do. My wife and I, along with our four amazing kids have met incredible people, made life-long friends, experienced amazing things, and traveled the world. The journey had its struggles, but it also had its victories, and I wouldn't trade my time in the Army for anything.

So, what began on 17 February 1987 ends today. I won't wear the uniform any longer, but I'll continue to serve for as long as I'm able.

Training for Eternity
